Mosquito Control Guide
There are thirty-five genera of mosquitoes encompassing some three thousand species, and only one of them (Toxorhynchites) is polite enough to refrain from dining on human blood. Skeeters are not our friends. Every time we donate some of our lifeblood to a female mosquito, she uses the protein therein to help her lay more eggs—and each of those eggs is another potential bloodsucker. We’re not doing ourselves any favors if we simply ignore the problem, and we won’t defeat the humble mosquito one swat at a time. So what can we do to ward off or outright decimate the skeeters in our environment? On a certain level, fighting mosquitoes is both easy and inexpensive. All it takes is a little common sense and some knowledge of the mosquito’s interests and life cycle. Joe Conlon, technical advisor for the American Mosquito Control Association, recommends following what he calls the Three Ds: Drain, dress properly, and DEET. He should know how to fight them; he’s been in the skeeter-battling business for over twenty years. |
